There are benign: Masses called thymoma, can cause muscle weakness (myesthenic syndrome), pure red cell aplasia (spindle type), and associated with rheumatic diseases (lupus, polymyositis). There is a malignant variety, and carcinoids affecting the organ. The thymus helps develop the t-cell immunity; involutes in adulthood.
