Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well.

Generally, swollen..: Lymph nodes that are painful are not painful. Rather, malignant nodes are usually enlarged, painless, matted together as an aggregate and may be adherent to the sub haven't tissues (aka, fixed). Your symptoms sound more consistent with infection. You should go see your dr. If these don't resolve/improve over the next few days. A swollen node can become infected (adenitis) or even abscesses.

Consider a biopsy : If there are no other symptoms associated with this "lymp node" and all blood work and lab findings are negative, then i would consider a biopsy. A biopsy will tell you exactly what tiis "node" consist of and if should have any further evaluation or treatment.
