Not necessarily a ..: short term thing. If the elderly individual is already on hospice, this would indicate life expectancy is already 6 months or less. I don't believe that deciding not to have a shunt would impact that estimate of life expectancy in a measurable way, although more psychological and physical changes might be seen, and at a more rapid pace.
