My 3 week old son has had a bleed on the brain and developed hydrocephalus as a result. what other treatment, besides a shunt, can be done?

Depends on variables: The bleed can impair the absorption of spinal fluid from the brain surface where it goes after circulating in the brain and spinal cord. It is made continuously and when the surfaces or plumbing is blocked, pressure builds and can damage the brain. Pediatric neurosurgeons can sometimes open a blocked area or redirect flow without a shunt but the needs of each case determines the treatment.

Scans/extent: It would be helpful to see the scans that were done. VP shunting is used to relieve the pressure caused by fluid build up. Depending on the extent of the bleeding. some infants recover well. I would advise a second opinion with a pediatric neurosurgeon if you would like to explore other options.
