Breast lump: Cystic means fluid-filled and generally means unlikely to be cancerous. If necessary, these can be drained with needle aspiration. Solid or non-fluid lumps are of more concern and often need to be biopsied to see if there are any cancer cells.

Cysts = fluid: If a mass is seen on a mammogram, an ultrasound can help tell if that mass is cystic, or fluid filled. Cysts are benign. If the ultrasound shows a solid mass, breast cancer would be more likely, and a biopsy would be needed.

The best,: least invasive way to determine if a breast mass is a cyst (which is rarely a problem) or a solid mass (which could be worrisome) is to do an ultrasound. From there, any further treatment or diagnostic studies can be more easily recommended.

Cysts are: benign fluid filled structures that usually require no treatment. Solid lesions have a higher chance of malignancy and sometimes require biopsy. Cysts and round solid masses look identical on mammography, but ultrasound can usually distinguish between the two relatively easily.
