A member asked:

Is it normal to have cramps so bad that you can't sleep and feel nauseated during your menstrual cycle?

Sadly yes but...: Menstrual cramps are fairly common and can be quite severe and associated with nausea and other debilitating symptoms. They are usually attributed to excessive uterine contractions and production of hormones called prostaglandins. A trial of Antiprostaglandins-analgesic medications also called "nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs" NSAID like ibuprofen Advil, Motrin, Aleve (naproxen) can be very helpful

Maybe, but not nice!: Tina, It's common to have this, and you should be evaluated by your pediatrician, possibly by a gyn. If unable to tolerate an internal exam, a pelvic sono can be done to exclude any serious concern. Usually this responds to NSAIDS, and/or oral contraceptives. So, while this may be normal, it doesn't mean you have to put up w/it. See someone, and do something about it. Good Luck

Endometriosis: Your described symptoms suggest a disease called "endometriosis". This is common in highly stressed individuals, and is caused by a seeding (implants of cells) from of the lining of the womb into the abdominal cavity, which irritates the intestines, causing your symptoms. Birth control pills may be a remedy which also preserves future fertility. See your healthcare provider about this.
