Follow RIPE: rest, -: ice, pain meds (like NSAIDs) and elevate, as much as possible. Soaking in warm water can be helpful. If its obviously infected, U will need some Antibiotics from your PCP. Seeing an Orthopedist or a Podiatrist for definitive treatment will help. Good Luck and Happy Holidays.

You will need: surgical removal of part of the nail that is ingrown. If there is a significant infection, you will also need antibiotics. Get to a doctor as soon as possible.

Why suffer.: This really depends on what "hurts" means. Fixing an ingrown toenail is a very effective and efficient surgery. It usually involves little on no down time. More importantly , the relief is immediate. Conservative treatment works sometimes, but more times than not it is a short lived temporary solution.
