Pelargonium sidoides: No drugs are proven to shorten colds. The herb pelargonium sidoides, the root of a geranium native to South Africa, is the best-proven treatment for colds, sinus infections & sinusitis. It's the first thing I take when getting sick & has helped hundreds of my patients. It is widely available in a product called Umcka, sold at health food stores & many pharmacies. Meds can't cure cold: Though many remedies can alleviate the discomfort of the typical head cold, there is no direct treatment for rhinovirus. Your immune system is what does the trick. Having previous exposure to a similar cold helps, as immunologic memory is presumably why seasoned schoolteachers, pediatricians and daycare workers have an edge. Asthma? Cough from overproduction of mucus needs to be addressed.

Fluids/nasal saline: Uncomplicated colds generally resolve by themselves within 10 days. Staying well hydrated and rinsing with nasal saline to relieve congestion is advised.

Ask Grandma!: Most meds do not cure "colds" but treat symptoms. If you do not want to take these there are some supplements like echinacea, vitamin c, zinc, and garlic. There are other snake oil type preparations but they may make you feel better but tough to beat chicken soup, fluids, rest and time.
