Can be done, but...: 100 years ago, 1 in 4 women in the USA died in Childbirth. Now, the rate is .28 per 1000. This is due mostly to the availability of doctors, blood, antibiotics and c/sections. Its true that women in, say, Sierra Leone, frequently give birth without medicine or doctors but the maternal mortality rate is 40 times higher (11 per 1,000 women). It can (and is) being done but carries some risk.
