Many: Hormone, mostly male hormone, is the main contributor, particularly in teens and young adults. Stress, irregular daily activities, working/studying too hard/too long may stir up hormone/immune system (causing "imbalance") and consequently develop pimples. Hot and humid environment may induce pimples. Drug like steroid may cause it. Pregnancy may do, too.

Occluded pores: Sebaceous gland hypertrophy with occlusion of pores and colonization with bacteria, commonly propionibacterium causes acne or pimples. This can be enhanced by hormonal changes.
