Could be pleurisy: The linings of the lungs can get inflamed and cause pain with breathing. It can be caused by a virus, or other infections, or just inflammation. But these symptoms could be caused by pneumonia, or muscle spasm in your upper back muscles, too. If you do not have stomach problems, try Ibuprofen 600-800 mg up to 3x/day with food and see if it improves. If not, see a doctor.

Needs evaluation: Pain associated with breathing is often due to inflammation of the lung lining (pleura) from infection, injury/trauma or even blood clotting problems. While it is somewhat reassuring that it comes and goes, you need to be evaluated by a doctor, consider chest x-ray and/or CT scan, and possible other tests. Prompt evaluation is suggested:)
