See Dentist: Grinding will generally cause enlargement on both sides. Swelling on one side can be from an access, an un-erupted wisdom tooth or some other pathology like a blocked salivary gland. You might also have mumps if you have never been vaccinated but you would generally feel ill if that were the case. You need to have a dentist evaluate it ASAP.

Evaluation: If your face was somewhat symmetrical until three months ago, and now one side is noticeably larger than the other, you need to be seen and evaluated as to why this has started all of a sudden. Many possible causes, but only one to solve your mystery. Please call a local dentist for an appointment.

Masseter hypertrophy: Masseteric hypertrophy is a relatively uncommon, condition that can occur unilaterally or bilaterally. Non-surgical modalities of treatment include tranquilizers or muscle relaxants, cognitive behavioral therapy and injection of very small doses of Botox A. See an orofacial pain specialist.

Asymmetry: We are all slightly asymmetric, with strong and weak sides to our faces. If you are noticing an asymmetric pattern that you thing is only of recent onset, however, you should be evaluated. Please seek consultation with an Orthodontist, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, or a Plastic Surgeon, the practitioners who diagnose and treat causes of, and treatment of, asymmetry.
