A member asked:

Got general anaesthetic end of week,i smoke, been told smoking can cause problems with the anaesthetic.i cant stop by the end of the week!

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Smoking: Even stopping for 48 hours will help your body detoxify by eliminating carbon monoxide in your system. If you have smoked for many years, the comment made to you can also mean that you have significant lung damage (COPD- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) which puts you at higher risk for the surgery and afterward. Ask the anesthesiologist to explain the issues.
