Absolutely: That pain is "episodic" in nature. You should really be evaluated to determine why you're having such intense pain... is it something related to your occlusion, grinding, excessive chewing, OR if it is a physical problem with the joint. Start with a local dentist who can take a medical history, examine you, and make recommendations.

Yes: Yes, can definitely have intermittent symptoms. See a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.

Of course: TMJ disorders may cause sporadic or continuous pain at rest or during common movements such as talking, chewing and yawning. See your dentist for evaluation.
