Hemorrhoids: The most common cause of occasional small amounts of bleeding is bleeding from internal hemorrhoids. The bleeding occurs at the end of a bowel movement, and more likely when constipated. Stool softeners and increasing fiber intake can reduce constipation. If blood is noted in the bowl, rather than just on the paper, a flexible sigmoidoscopy is mandatory to be certain that cancer is not the cause.
