Needs to be examined: Rectal bleeding can mean different things in different age groups. You mentioned that your question was about your father. A common cause of rectal bleeding is hemorrhoids. However, there are other causes, and rectal bleeding in a middle-aged male warrants at least a physical exam. He should schedule an appointment to be evaluated by his physician. He may need a colonoscopy.
