Risk in any surgery: All surgeries/procedures are inherently risky. As with any surgery, there is a risk of wound infection, bleeding, pain and even death. However, because transplant surgery requires immunosuppression, the risk of developing infection is higher than other procedures. Hence, potential kidney transplant recipients are extensively screened before being allowed to proceed with transplant surgery.
