Wait it out...: It's normal for an obstructing kidney stone to cause crampy intermittent pain, and unfortunately until the stone is managed pain can arise. Pain that isn't controlled by medicine by mouth should prompt an er visit, also fevers/chills. If the stone is small enough to pass, taking a medicine like Flomax (tamsulosin) and drinking plenty of water helps decrease the time it takes to pass.

Pain meds : Talk to your urologist who is preparing for the surgery. He needs to know since undue pain may make him change plans with a sooner or different procedure. He also can give you pain meds until procedure time.
