3 month old: Take your baby to an ER if there is fever, overly rapid or difficulty breathing, poor feeding, irritability, feeding poorly or regurgitating food, sleeping excessively. Three month olds are very very fragile and can deteriorate quickly. If you have any doubts at all, err on the side of caution and safety. Hope your baby recovers fully and soon.

RSV: While it may or may not be RSV the recommendations are the same. Use nasal saline drops and bulb suctioning as needed to decrease the nasal congestion as possible. If breathing becomes difficult at all…faster, using tummy muscles, grunting, then off the the nearest emergency room you go. Don't be hesitant to ask for help. Your doctor's office will have somebody on-call through the weekend too.

Mgt suggestions: RSV symptoms may recur, but there is also a possibility of a secondary infection with another bacteria or another virus. If she is having any respiratory distress, fast breathing , excessive drooling or vomiting, I would advise taking her to the ED. If she seems comfortable, is feeding normally, keep her well hydrated, use a mist humidifier and monitor her temperature.

Need Rx: If your child was diagnosed with RSV 2 wks ago , you need to be careful with the severity of his symptoms now. If he just has runny nose with no breathing difficulty , he is feeding well & has no fever then you can wait for 1-2 days . If you think that you are not able to keep up with suctioning his nose as they tend to have Xs secretions , you may have to take him to urgent care.

Fluid intake: Keep baby's nose clear with saline drops and/or gentle suction so she can feed (try swallowing with a blocked nose!). If she feeds OK, is pink, happy and alert, no concern. If she is drowsy, won't feed, blue with coughing or breathing hard see your doctor or ER, especially if feverish, has a rash, and/or cool hands & feet. She may have a new virus, but hard to be sure at this age.
