Retinopathy: Far and away, the most common diabetic eye complication is retinopathy. This involves a spectrum of retinal changes caused by elevated blood sugar and oxygen delivery problems to the retina. We recommend yearly dilated eye exams to detect changes of retinopathy. There is a less commonly seen condition called diabetic myopic lens shift - this can be detected by an eye care professional as well.

Glaucoma, pain: The most advanced diabetic retinopathy cases lead to painless vision loss, however; eventually the proliferative disease reaches the iris and angle. This new vessels lead to neovascular glaucoma, which is very painful. Patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy should be followed several times a year.
