Retinal problems: There are four common long term complications that may affect those people with diabetes-- heart problems, kidney problems, circulation problems, and eye problems. In the eye, sugar may accumulate over the years in the retina, leading to retinal hemorrhages and blindness. Your best source of information is your treating physician, who can go over all of this with you.
