What part of the brain does short term memory loss affect?

Several areas: There are many areas of the brain involved in memory. Working memory involves the prefrontal cortex, and that's very brief memory operations. Then the hippocampus is involved with short term memory before the memory becomes long term and is systemic or throughout the brain. There are many different types of memory functions.

Opposite direction: Memory function (working, short- and long-term) are not completely confined to a single part. Several structures are critically important and the nerve connections are essential too. Damage from injury or disease or simply wearing out can impair all types - but short-term is very fragile since it needs to deal w/ converting working to long-term. Think 'process' more than 'place'.
