SSRIs: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed medications for generalized anxiety disorder. These include fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, and citalopram (among others). They are more or less equal in terms of likelihood of therapeutic response. Ideally, they should be started at low doses since they can sometimes worsen anxiety if the starting dose is high.
