Non-op & surgery: If the scaphoid fracture is only minimally displaced, it has a good chance to heal in a cast. The cast needs to go out over the thumb. Sometimes it needs to go up over the elbow too. If your doctor thinks that it won't heal in a cast, a screw can be put across it in the hope of making it heal better and/or faster.

Surgery Recommended : Reasons for surgery: 1. Scaphoid non-unions. 2. Lifestyle. Non-unions are rare but unpredictable. Any scaphoid fracture can fail to heal. That ruins any activity requiring full grip or range of motion for the rest of your life. 8 to 12 weeks of casting can cost one a job, athletic fitness, etc. Virtually all surgeons have surgery so they can keep working. Use your values to decide what to do.

It depends: It depends on the fracture location, displacement, and your health. Treatment ranges from immobilization in a cast to surgery with placement of a screw into the scaphoid.
