Xray to start: Scaphoid fractures can be tough to diagnose. The first study to get is an xray. If you can't see it on that x-ray and the doctor remains concerned, often a repeat x-ray 1-2 weeks later shows it. Other options include a bone scan, ct scan, or mri.
Dr. Todd Guyette

Xrays, CT scan: Scaphoid fractures are a radiographic diagnosis and requires either plain xray or sometimes ct.

When can I play volleyball again after a scaphoid fracture?

It depends: Is your fracture healed? Usually, scaphoid fractures take anywhere from 8-12 weeks to heal. Was your fracture fixed surgically, or treated in a cast? Many factors go into return to play decisions after scaphoid fractures, but the number one question is "is the scaphoid healed?" and if the answer is yes, you should be able to resume volleyball.

How long can I wait to go to the hospital for a scaphoid fracture?

Days, not weeks: If you know you have a scaphoid fracture, you should see an orthopaedic surgeon asap as it may require surgery. Scaphoid fractures are notoriously slow to heal, and if the fracture is not addressed appropriately, it can lead to chronic wrist pain and arthritis. Make sure you see an orthopaedic surgeon asap!

2-3: Most scaphoid fractures take 2-3 months to heal, though some can take quite a bit longer. If the fracture is non-displaced, cast immobilization is usually sufficient treatment. Many of these fractures will require surgery for appropriate fixation and healing.

Possibly none.: For scaphoid fractures that heal, either through immobilization or surgery, minimal long term effects are noted. However, scaphoid fractures that do not heal may lead to arthritic changes in the wrist. These changes eventually cause wrist stiffness and pain. Arthritis can often be tolerated with braces and medications, but occasionally corticosteroid injections or even surgery is necessary.

If you have wrist pain post injury and especially on the thumb side of the wrist please see your doctor. Undiagnosed or delayed diagnosed scaphoid fractures can potentially be a big problem.

Right away!: If your doctor has confirmed that your fracture has healed, you can start playing again. Start slow and gradually build up to your pre-injury playing frequency!
