Infections: An undiagnosed infection most commonly a urinary tract infection can initiate premature labor. The second most common cause is premature rupture of the membranes. Thirdly, trauma to the pregnancy due to a mother's existing medical illness untreated. Fourthly, a lack of oxygen transfer from the mother (hypoxia). Finally, there are some unknown initiators of premature labor.
