Depends on severity!: Carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated with splinting at night, streroid injections, and outpatient surgery. My bias is to get an injection first. I would get nerve conduction studies prior to surgery. Also, the median nerve can be trapped higher up: this is called pronator teres syndrome, and is above the wrist and immeidately below the elbow.
