Yes: Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (niddm) used to be synonymous with diabetes type 2. However, we all know type 2 diabetics who require Insulin so it is not a good description of the disease. The difference is that type 2 diabetes is not due to a lack of Insulin production but rather an inability to respond adequately to Insulin - so more Insulin is needed to overcome that limitation.
