Vague: Does this occur after activity or just on its own? Have you had any type of injury to your back. Is there any hint of what is called "foot drop," where you can lower the foot, but have a hard time raising? If in doubt, see a Dr.

Soft tissue or Bone.: An exam will determine the site of the stabbing sensation's origin. It has to be either soft tissue or bone. It wouldn't' take long to narrow the search down and come up with a reasonable diagnosis and treatment plan.
