A member asked:

Why would my cardiologist want me to do a nuclear walking treadmill vs a regular one? will the dye be dangerous? how could this take 3 full hours?

Women and CAD: Can't be sure, but I suspect your cardiologist recommended a nuclear stress test for to help detect coronary artery disease (CAD). In women, traditional stress test is less helpful than a nuclear stress test in diagnosing heart disease. It takes longer because contrast is used is used. Suggest you discuss the procedure and possible complications with your cardiologist.

Depend pretest proba: A plain exercise treadmill stress test is less sensitive than a treadmill test with an imaging agent (i.e. Ultrasound or nuclear camera). In other words, if you have a high probability of having significant CAD, a plain treadmill may pick it up with ECG changes as long as you do a good work load (>85% MPHR for age). A nuclear exercise test is more sensitive bc radiactive tracer is injected.
