Need X-Ray Vision: Could be either or something else. To be sure, the hand should be examined in-person and a decision made as to what to do , especially at this age. Would be important to know the exact circumstances of the injury, if any, or if it was from repetitive activities. The fact that the area is tender and purple places it in a suspicious category. next

Needs to see doctor: and get an x-ray. If it is negative may need a bone scan to pickup a stress fracture.

Purple knuckles: the purple discoloration represent areas of trauma because of her exercises. The discoloration is due to broken small blood vessels or capillaries
