Does hypothyroidism effect the nervous system?

Yeah man..it DOES: It can make people appear to be depressed, demented, lethargic, apathetic, lackadaisical- sounds like we're just throwing out insult after insult but hey, that's HYPOTHYROIDISM. It's also capable of doing something to CSF fluid that no other endocrinopathy does- causes a WBC shift UP. So, just remember residents...high WBC in CSF...what's the diff? Meningitis/Infection, GBS, Hypothyroidism. Fix!

Yes: Hypothyroidism can affect nervous system development (affecting memory and cognition) nerve function ( such a peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome) In a most extreme cases it can result in coma. Fortunately most cases are detected before severe side effects occur.

Yes: It affects every system, organ and process in your body. Luckily it's very easy to treat with the proper daily dose of BRAND NAME thyroxine replacement and an occ. lab test. Check w/your doctor,

Possibly: A significantly low thyroid level affects every part of the body including the nervous system, but once treated, any problems should be reversed.
