I would wait ..: While there is nothing specific about a tattoo that would be dangerous before your TMJ surgery, unexpected complications like a skin infection, which does happen rarely, might occur. This would likely postpone your surgery, and/or increase the risk of a complication following your surgery. I would wait until you are completely healed from the TMJ surgery to pursue a tattoo.

Wait: I believe you should put this question to the doctor who is performing the surgery. There is always the risk of complications such as infection with any procedure, so your tattoo should wait until your doctor not only perform the surgery but even until he decides that your joints had healed enough.

Wait: Good idea to let more healing take place and your immune system needs to build back up post-surgery

Not recommended: Get your TMJ prosthesis surgery done first, then make "plans" to get a tattoo. If you get an infection or other unexpected complications then surgery will need to be postponed.

Wait!!: Wait til well after the TMJ prosthesis surgery. If you get bactereremia from the tatoo, it could infect the prosthesis and the prosthesis would have to be removed.
