Surgery is done to reconstruct the ligaments of the ac joint to restabilize the joint. Indications for surgery include pain and instability. If the bone is only slightly raised and not that painful with use, then living with the deformity is acceptable as well.

How Long?: If you haven't had this pain very long and haven't suffered any significant injury, it may be a strain of your ac joint (where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade). Often avoiding activities that cause the pain for a while will result in improvement. If you have had pain and trouble for some time, i would recommend you see a shoulder specialist.
