Eustachian tube: When you have a cold, the Eustachian tube will often swell. When swollen, it can't equalize the pressure change associated with flying as well as it typically can. When the ear can't equalize pressure efficiently, it is very painful. Try Afrin (oxymetazoline) decongestant spray and have her force air with the nose pinched. This may help equalize the pressure.

Eustachian tube pbm: The walls of the Eustachian tube may swell (cold)and block some air movement to and from the middle ear. When flying, the craft is pressurized and air is pushed out of the middle ear. When you descend to land, there is a vacuum in the middle ear and air is trying to get back in. The vacuum stretches the ear drum causing pain. Yawning or chewing can open the tube and equalize the pressure.
