Not alone.: The test is one of many used to diagnose ms. Even mris of the brain are not specific enough. The diagnosis is a compellation of tests including the lp, x-rays, and clinical presentation with a thorough exam. Electrodiagnostic tests are also used.

Sometimes: On occasion, the brain MRI is somewhat non-diagnostic, especially if ms involves the spinal cord predominantly. A cervical MRI might assist in helping confirm the diagnosis. As mentioned, lumbar puncture might be useful, but, currently, the best test is for a physician to look and all the data and correlate that the patient has a consistent ms diagnosis.
