Start w pediatrician: After eval by pediatrician, referral to a pediatric pulmonologist may be warranted. There can be several reasons for cough to last more than 2 weeks. Some adult pulmonologists may see kids, but a pediatric specialist may be more equipped to evaluate. It also should be stressed that being a smoker or having tobacco smoke exposure can only make things worse.

Smoke avoidance: Smoke is very irritating to the airways, and should be avoided, particularly if you have respiratory symptoms. If you have asthma, there is an increased chance that your child also has asthma. During viral illness, there may be a prolonged cough due to reactivity of the airways.
