Yes: It can definitely cause anemia in what we call anemia of inflammation. It is also known as anemia of chronic disease. The kidneys secrete an important hormone called erythopoetin which helps with the production of red blood cells. For this reason, you have anemia of chronic disease. You should definitely have iron studies drawn and see if you are a candidate for medication.
