How does kidney disease lead to anemia?

Erythropoietin: The kidneys make a hormone called erythropoietin which travels to the bone marrow and tells it to make red blood cells. If the kidneys are diseased they sometimes do not make this hormone and the person will become anemic. Always remember there are many reasons a person can become anemic- kidney disease is only one way.

Anemia in CKD: Patients with chronic kidney disease (ckd) can have anemia due to their kidneys not making a hormone, erythropoietin (epo). In these patients, injections of shots are given to provide them with epo. These can be ordered from a nephrologist. There are other causes of anemia, apart from a reduction in EPO levels in CKD patients. If the patient does not respond, check to see if there's GI blood loss.
