Reversed sequence: Progression of chronic kidney disease results in development of anemia because kidney is no longer able to produce erythropoietin, a hormone enhancing red blood cell production from bone marrow.

Other way around: As kidney function declines the production of erythropoietin drops. This is a signal for rbcs production. More kidney issues = lower hgb.
