See full answer: Unless the lesion is relatively big (greater than 1/2 inch), the dermatologist will usually numb it and then do a shave biopsy to remove it. Bigger lesions usually have small ares biopsied.

Size of mole: A biopsy's size is related to the size of the original mole that is being tested, and will be located at the same place.
