Varicose veins: varicose veins rarely cause dvt. And only if you get superficial thrombophlebitis that then tracks up the superficial vein into the deep. Stagnation of blood flow is what causes dvts

DVT's in deep veins: DVT or deep vein thrombosis is confined to the deep veins. Varicose veins are bulging superficial veins. These empty into the deep veins. Occasionally, clots in superficial veins can grow and enter the deep veins. Usually, some condition promoting clotting tendency in blood combined with immobility causes most DVT's.

Not ususally: They are generally only a medical or cosmetic nuisance. They can be treated easily in this day with either medical or surgical methods. Only superficial phlebitis or a superficial clot that extends into the deep system, i.e a DVT can become a serious or life threatening issue and can sometimes, yet rarely, be the result of superficial venous disease.

Rarely: As a vascular surgeon, I have seen several cases of DVT or deep venous thrombosis, that have occurred secondary to varicose vein disease. Typically in these scenarios a superficial clot begins in the varicose veins at the surface, spreads into a deeper superficial saphenous vein, & ultimately makes its way into the deep vein (femoral or popliteal vein). Blood thinner therapy is indicated.

VV and DVT: Varicose veins do not cause DVT. Varicose veins are part of the superficial system of veins and DVT occurs in the deep system of veins. DVT is usually due to one of 3 factors: venous stasis, hypercoagulable condition or injury to the vein wall. Varicose veins can lead to superficial phlebitis which has nothing to do with deep phlebitis.
