Distention : Ur stretching the veins when sitting in same position for long time. This causes pain. Treatment is to elevate ur legs or compression as u have found out.

Venous insufficiency: If you can feel a hard, firm clot there, that's superficial thrombophlebitis. My guess is you can't since you didn't mention that so this is just pain from the vein itself. The back of fluid and blood causes swelling in the calf creating swelling and cramps. See a vein specialist or phlebologist. Phlebology.Org for referral.

Thrombophlebitis : You likely have a clot in a portion of that superficial vein. This is known as superficial thrombophlebitis. Aside from the discomfort, this is a relatively benign entity. Compression, warm compressed and NSAIDS are all helpful.
