Possibly: Sometimes varicose veins can become inflamed - Phlebitis. Sometimes small blood clots can occur - Thrombophlebitis. I would suggest seeing your doctor for an ultrasound as this will give you the most information. Good luck.

Pain: You can get pain in varicose veins, which are superficial to the skin. This is not a marker for deep vein thrombosis. I would recommend a venous Doppler-sonogram to allay your fears.
