200k yearly: Before vaccination there were 200,000 cases of Diphtheria a year. Since vaccination, diphtheria in the US remains isolated to the homeless, low socioeconomic groups and alcoholics. Also travelers from international countries that still have endemic disease create isolated cases in the US. Here is a neat site I found on the history! http://www.historyofvaccines.org/content/timelines/diphtheria
