My son's fasting glucose was 102 this morning. his urine screening was negative. what could have caused his reading to be in the diabetic range?

It's not: Who told you 102 was in the diabetic range? 80-120 is normal blood sugar range. Of course there are plenty of times that we can have individual outliers (below or above) and still be considered normal. 102 is perfectly normal.
