A member asked:

I was looking at a chest x-ray, and i can see the diaphragm, but not the intercostals. why?

Good question: The diaphragm is mostly visible because it sits next to air filled lung, is a large muscle, and is seen on edge or en face. Intercostal muscles are small and not seen on edge. So, even though they sit next to air filled lung they are not conspicuous.

Not dense enough: Intercostal muscles are not normally seen on chest xray. Their soft tissue density is not great enough. Details of muscles on plain radiographs are lacking. CT or MR show these soft tissues to much better advantage.
