A member asked:

How effective is a splenectomy for a child with sickle cell? what are possible complications?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

May help: Usually spleens autoinfarct (shrink to small fibrous tissue), sometimes spleens capture red cells and get very large with a lot of blood in them. This is called splenic sequestration syndrome and sometimes splenectomy is required. Infection is the major complication and can be prevented with vaccinations and oral antibiotics. Please speak to your child's doctor.
