A member asked:

In case of splenectomy , if the blood cells " rbcs " die , where does it go ??

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Splenic function: The spleen is a place where older red cells die after they age. The spleen is part of the reticuloendothelial system which includes the liver. The liver takes over. Interesting enough the spleen stores up to 1/3 of our circulating blood cells , so expect the blood counts to go up after a splenectomy
