A member asked:

Thalassemic patient with hypersplenism want toundergo bmt do you recommend splenectomy prior to bmt?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not necessarily: I am assuming bmt is the ENT procedure but regardless, the main reasons to undergo a splenectomy are if the enlarged spleen is causing symptoms due to the size or if it is contributing to the anemia or causing severe leukopenia or thrombocytopenia. There are reasons not to do the splenectomy before such as sepsis. The decision is beyond a 400 character answer.
